The Gemological Institute (GIA) is a professional, internationally recognized gemological institute with branches around the world. It is regarded as the most rigorous institution of its kind for determining the parameters of the classification of diamond quality and value.
Diamonds from around the world that are sent to GIA for gemological certification. These stones are usually above-average stones of the highest quality available on the market.
GIA diamonds are also distinguished because they are traded according to a fixed price list which is updated on a weekly basis every Thursday.
Today, there are many gemological institutes of various types in Israel and around the world, such as IGI, HRD, IGL, CGL, etc. It is important to pay attention to the differences between them because of the significant differences between them in terms of the level of quality in classifying and evaluating diamonds.
Advantages of Buying GIA diamonds:
GIA is an international laboratory recognized worldwide. It is considered the most stringent of its kind due to its high standards and uncompromising diligence in the appraising diamonds.
GIA assesses a diamond only before placing it in a setting. (These stones are usually the largest and most central diamonds in a setting.) At the end of the evaluation, a certificate is issued for each particular stone, providing it a long-term guarantee for the results of the appraisal, enabling the diamond to be traded at a later date. Diamonds may also be exchanged or sold back to the diamond exchange.
GIA diamonds are traded according to the "Rapaport" price list which is updated every Thursday, allowing customers to know the value of a diamond at any given time. (The value of GIA diamonds usually remains stable for many years.)
Disadvantages of Buying GIA Diamonds:
GIA certificates may take up to two weeks from the date the gem arrives at the Gemological Institute before they are issued.
The fee for issuing the certificate may not be justified relative to the final price of a particular piece of jewelry (Customarily, certificates are issued for diamonds weighing at least 30 points.)
GIA diamonds are usually more costly to the end customer, even though diamonds of the same quality with different certificates may be available at lower prices. Price differences may run 10% to 30% higher on the final price of that piece of jewelry.
Summary of Recommendations
Diamond jewelry should be purchased only from businesses licensed by the Ministry of Economy and Industry.
Obtain an official grading report from a reputable gemological institute (not by the store itself), which should itemize all the data about the piece of jewelry or diamond you are purchasing (in order to ensure accurate data about the piece, and to avoid any type of imitation diamonds).
Buying diamond jewelry can be a costly business. Customers should demand proper documents of the transaction, including an official purchase invoice and warranty.
